MGC CONCESSION EXTENSION
Matola Gas Company (MGC), a subsidiary of Gigajoule, has successfully extended its gas concession in Mozambique from 2029 until 2045.
This is a significant milestone for MGC, as the existing pipeline connecting the Rompco gas pipeline with the market in Matola and Maputo will be expanded to allow regasified LNG to be supplied to the South African market.
The Southern African gas markets are currently supplied from the Pande and Temana gas fields in Mozambique, through the 900km Rompco gas pipeline. These gas fields are expected to start their decline to end-of-life in 2027. To balance this decline and supply additional gas to the existing gas markets and for further growth, Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) will be imported through the Matola harbour. The concession for this LNG project was awarded to the Beluluane Gas Company (BGC), a company being co-sponsored and developed by Gigajoule.
All technical design work and Environmental Studies have been completed and approved for this project. Currently, the company is negotiating Gas Offtake agreements with the existing South African gas market, as well as new gas-fired power plants to be constructed in Mozambique and South Africa.
BGC and MGC are planning to be operational by the end of 2027 and will be instrumental in mitigating the so-called gas cliff faced by the South African gas user market.
