In line with Gigajoule’s focus on cleaner energy, Gigajoule established Gigawatt Mozambique, in partnership with Mozambican shareholders. With focus on the potential for natural-gas-fired power stations in Mozambique.
Gigawatt secured a 25-year concession for the construction and operation of a 350MW natural gas fired power station at Ressano Garcia, Mozambique. In July 2012, the first temporary power stations became operational on Gigawatt’s site, while the permanent Gigawatt plant was under development. Construction of the 120MW permanent power plant commenced in June 2014 and was completed within the schedule and budget in December 2015.
The generated power is sold to EDM, the Mozambique national power utility. The gas for the Gigawatt power plant is supplied by Matola Gas Company (Gigajoule’s subsidiary company).
The Gigawatt gas fired power plant cost $200mil to build and power is generated through 13 Rolls Royce internal combustion gas engines. The project was awarded one the best project finance deals in the world, by World Finance in 2014.
In 2016 Africa Investor awarded Gigajoule the coveted Ai African Developer of the Year award for the Gigawatt project.
Gigawatt is currently in the process of design and development for expanding the power plant.
